Diana’s Sunday QUickie–Fantasy that’s not fantasy

Best fantasy book that’s not a fantasy? I’m gonna say Bee Season by Myla Goldberg.  This is not the kind of book I usually like to read (see my earlier post about how I like to read for enjoyment!) but my husband challenged me to read the first fifty pages, and I ended up being hooked in by the exquisitely beautiful writing and complex characters. However, it wasn’t until I got to the end that I realized that this book is, at the very least, magical realism. On the surface it’s a story about spelling bees and family relationships, but underneath it there’s a layer of spiritualism and mysticism that blew me away when I read it.  I’m not sure if it’s a book I would ever read again, but I just remember thinking, “Hey! This is a fantasy book! How cool is that!”
