More words about words and more

My friends can attest I like few things better than talking about myself, but I’ll try to keep this intro reasonable:

I write books and stories and poems under the name Tim Pratt, and an urban fantasy series under the name T.A. Pratt. (Oh, and I publish the occasional bit of prose pornography under a pseudonym only my wife and a couple of editors know.)

This writing thing, it’s going okay. I’ve won a couple of awards (a Hugo, a Rhysling, a Joshua Norton) and lost a few others (a Mythopoeic, a Campbell, a Nebula, a World Fantasy Award). Since 2003 I’ve published five novels (so far) and a couple of story collections and even a book of poems that about seven people bought. I write about monsters and love and cities and lakes and robots and sex and questions and mysteries. I have a fondness for anticlimaxes and jokes about epistemology. These qualities may limit my appeal, but one must be true to oneself.

I’m one of those writers who likes writing (as opposed to all those writers who like having written). I like “having written” insofar as it means I’m that much closer to getting paid, but mostly, I’m in it for the process, the challenge, the exploration of characters and worlds. I’d write even if nobody paid me, though not as much, and I’d skip the revising, proofreading, and copyediting parts.

For a day job, I’m a senior editor at a trade magazine devoted to science fiction and fantasy publishing, and I do a fair bit of freelance writing, from video reviews to a weekly column about weird and interesting sex/porn/etc. related stuff on the internet. I’m married to another writer — Heather Shaw — and we have a son, River, who enjoys chewing on books. We live in Oakland California (which is nicer than you think, mostly) in an apartment overlooking a lake. Life is pretty good.
