Magic District: Launch Party on Friday the 13th!

Dear Reader:

I’ve spent the last several days trying to figure out what to write for the opening post for this site. At first I tried for something with a deep and mystical feel…

Welcome to the Magic District, where you can find portals to distant realms, witness the conflicts between gods and demons, join the hunt for power unlimited…

As you can see, it ended up sounding a bit too insufferable and pompous, and I was afraid that visitors to the site would be too busy rolling their eyes to read what we had to say. So, enough with flowing introductions and mystical phrases!

We’re a small group of fantasy authors, with books ranging from alternate history to paranormal to fantasy that defies categorization. Drawing upon a broad range of experience, we hope to provide to our readers (and potential readers as well) an insight into our work and craft, while also giving behind-the-scenes glimpses into our experiences in the publishing industry. We plan on having articles that will cover a wide range of topics such as: themes in urban fantasy, whether heroes can really be trusted, how writing is like making chili, and how to improve your chances of landing the right agent for you.

But that’s not all!  We’ll also have contests and giveaways of awesome prizes and signed copies of our books, as well as the occasional special feature piece of short fiction.

All of this begins on Friday the 13th!

Finally, you ask, why the name Magic District? (Would it be wrong to say that we chose this because the other names we thought of were already taken?  Right… best not to mention that.)  Despite the possible humble origins of the name, it suits our purpose better than we could have ever imagined. If you’re in a big city and you want to see the best in fashion, you go to the Garment District. If you want to find the epitome of culture, you go to the Museum District.

If you want to find the best and brightest in magic and fantasy, you come to the Magic District.

Welcome, and enjoy!

I LOVE the name, it’s perfect considering the authors here. I can’t wait to see what ya’ll do with the new blog. 🙂

It really is a great name for the site, and I’ll be looking forward to reading it.

One quick suggestion, though — while you’ve got RSS feeds readily available for individual entries, there’s no link for an RSS feed from the main site. Adding https://magicdistrict.wordpress.com/feed/ to my reader seems to do the trick, although it defaults to showing up as an untitled feed (quickly and easily remedied, at least in Google Reader.) I’d encourage you all to add a link to the main page with the site’s RSS feed.

I was told there would be cookies…

Thanks for the advice, Jeremy. I’ll get right on that!

And, Zita, you’ll have to talk to Greg about the cookies. He’s the snack man.
