Correction about it was cheap to get living space in NYC up until the mid-90's. I've lived here since the late 70's., when I also got my first 'real job' out of grad school -- in publishing, which paid about $6500 a year. Yes. That was the whole salary for 12 months, before taxes and ss etc.

It's never been cheap living here, except in the 50's, 60's and early 70's when white flight to the suburbs, and then eroding tax base and crime made it so. And that was, incidentally, when it was really creative here -- or so I've been told by those who were here then. I wasn't. :)

It is a terrific city for writers. You didn't mention the NYPL, which is a terrific world class resource that most cities don't have, unless you have access to a good academic research library.

I am jealous now... >.< I want to go to cool parties! The closest I get here in Athens is going to UGA English Alumni events (which I never do, soooo... yeah). It may be cheaper, but I really do think you get more for your money in New York in terms of cooler living.

It's NEW YORK!!! I've never lived more than 2 hours away from it. Right now, I'm a comfortable 80 minute train (or car) ride away. NYC is the heart of the world--a dirty, smelly, crazy, ridiculously amazing heart. My daughter lives in Manhattan. She works in one of the city museums. She's lived in NYC for three years and walks EVERYWHERE. Just yesterday, while running an errand for the museum, she came upon an alley bistro that she said, "looks like I just stepped through a portal and into Paris." There are magical places everywhere. Grand and slimy, scary and whimsical. There's no place in the world like it.

Can you tell I love NY?

Stay as long as you can. Absorb it so that no matter where you go, it stays with you. And when someone says to you, "So you finally got out of New York, huh?" you can smile and nod and quell the impulse to smirk.
